"A winning combination of better viticulture, the development of new wine regions and the emergence of a young generation of wine-making talent make South Africa the most dynamic wine-producing country in the world right now."

- Tim Atkin MW

South African Wine

South Africa is the new world’s oldest wine producing region. Since the first harvest in 1659, South Africa’s rise to prominence on the world stage has taken its fair share of twists and turns. There can be no doubt now that the country is producing some of the world’s best wines, echoed by increasing export volumes and matched by the rise in scores from serious wine critics around the globe.

With over 90% of winegrowing taking place in the Western Cape province, one doesn’t have to venture too far away from Cape Town to track down the best bottles of South African wine. Whether it’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc; South African wine has something for everyone.

About South Africa

Dubbed “The Rainbow Nation”, South Africa truly is a melting pot of cultures. Boasting eleven official languages spread across nine provinces, diversity reigns supreme at the tip of the African continent.

This diversity carries through into the country’s wines as well. The Western Cape province has five regions within it, each one subdivided into more than twenty winegrowing districts. These districts are even further broken down into wards. This makes it well worth your while to explore wines from South Africa, as the style will vary dramatically depending on its production area.
