New Zealand blasted on to the wine scene with their unique expression of Sauvignon Blanc. There are some who would say their quality rivals even that of the famed offerings from Sancerre in France. No matter where you stand, there is no denying that the category has forged a fierce reputation here in the USA.
The country is not a one-trick pony, though. New Zealand is fast becoming one of the world’s best Pinot Noir producing regions and commands a comfortable grasp over Syrah, Malbec and Riesling as well.
About New Zealand
Boasting unparalleled scenic beauty, New Zealand is split into two islands with ten wine growing regions between them. Most of the vineyards are planted on the east side of the islands, yet regardless of position and due to the small size of the country, no vineyard is ever more than 80 miles from the coast.
As a result of the tumultuous terrain, the overarching maritime climate breaks down into an incredible array of meso climates that can vary from vineyard to vineyard. New Zealand wine started to take off on a global scale in the 1970s, but one should not forget that vines were first planted on the islands in the early 1800s.
