French Wine
France is without a doubt the undisputed champion of the wine world. It’s why you’ll hear references to wines from other regions being made in a Burgundian style, having Rhône-like characteristics or crafted in the traditional Champagne method. French wine has become the benchmark on which all others are judged.
There is a reason for this. Some of the best wine in the world is made in France, and has been for centuries. Anyone who has visited the famed chateaux of Bordeaux, climbed the slopes of Hermitage or meandered through the vineyards of the Côte d'Or returns with stories of cherished memories and unforgettable bottles drunk in a daze of awe and wonderment.
About France
France pioneered a facet of the wine world that we almost take for granted today: classified winegrowing areas. The French AOC (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlées) system demarcated growing areas for specific varieties as well as imposing specific quality requirements in order to attain AOC designations on a wine label.
This system has been adopted throughout both old and new world winegrowing countries. Common terms such as AVA, GI, DO and W.O. among others, all stem from France’s AOC. With multiple centuries of winemaking history, the French AOC is slow to change (if at all). However, it creates a great degree of certainty for wine lovers when picking up a bottle of French wine.
