Spain

"Ask any Spaniard about the country’s wine industry and they’ll tell you two things. One, that wine is made in every region in the country. And secondly, that great wine is made in every region in the country."

Spanish Wine

In a region with such a long and storied history of winemaking, it’s really only in the last two decades that the category has made its way into prominence among American wine drinkers.

With a wide array of styles and varietals from an even wider array of classified winegrowing regions, Spain is truly a treasure trove of wine options. From Rioja in the north, Rias Baixas to the west, Priorat to the east and Jerez to the south, wine lovers can literally take their pick of the bunch.

About Spain

No other wine producing nation in the world has more vines planted than Spain. With seventeen administrative divisions and roughly 140 official wine designations, Spain takes its place as the world’s third largest wine producing country.

Generally thought of as a warm climate wine growing region, one should be careful not to lump all Spanish areas into that basket. A quick glance at a topographical map will show the varied landscapes stretching across the country. Average elevation of the vineyards is around 2,000 feet above sea level, which helps to ensure beautiful fruit thanks to the cooler nights resulting in a longer ripening period.
