Cinsault
Vineyards
The grapes are sourced from the Piekenierskloof. This Cinsault vineyard was planted in 1967. Very old, unirrigated bush vines are planted in deep sandy soils. These elevated sites have a warm climate with cooling evening winds.
Winery
80% of the Cinsault is destemmed, while 20% of the fruit is fermented as whole clusters. Spontaneous fermentation in open top 4-ton fermentation tanks. Gentle punch downs and pump overs are performed during fermentation. Maturation takes place in seasoned 500ℓ French oak barrels for approximately 14 months.
Tasting Note
Palest ruby with perfumed raspberry, pomegranate, rose petals and vanilla pod. Elegant and ethereal, the palate carries the vibrant red fruit with finesse. Silky, barely-there tannins offer subtle structure to the lively red-fruit acidity, leading to a long, lingering finish of fresh strawberries.
Old Vine Project
This wine is made from Certified Heritage Vineyards through the Old Vine Project, a non-profit company that certifies vineyards 35 years and older. The Cinsault vineyard was planted in 1967 and is planted on its own rootstock, which is very rare to find, and provides the purest varietal expression. These bush vines are planted at very low density with only 1785 vines per hectare, allowing them to thrive in the low rainfall area without irrigation. Old vines give more concentration, complexity, and depth of mid-palate fruit compared to young vines.
